Groundbreaking as the first mainstream stoner comedy; derivitive elements noted by detractors
Authentic late-70s SoCal counterculture time capsule
Cheech and Chong's natural chemistry and improvisational rapport anchor the film
Quotable catchphrases and stoner banter; overuse of 'man' grates on some
Broad stoner archetypes with distinctive personas but minimal depth
Classic stoner gags but repetitive; first half stronger than second
Slow stretches and uneven rhythm; first half lively, second half drags
